Awesome, I love triple j, so many great covers!

Thanks for sharing this video with us!

I went in knowing nothing about Babe Rainbow, but know I shall include at least include one of their songs on my ever-expanding playlist (m4a).

    TIL:

Monkey Disco style band from Byron, uses French influence and 60’s styled instrumentation and fidelity with a very vintage psychedelic sound.

    Band members:

    1. Angus – percussion, vocals
    2. Lulu – bass guitar, keys, vocals
    3. Jack – guitar, vocals[1]

Babe Rainbow is an Australian psychedelic rock band from Byron Bay, New South Wales. The band has been characterised by their “throw-back” style of 1960s psychedelic rock along with their surf culture imagery. The band were conceived in 2014 in Rainbow Bay by Angus Dowling and Jack Crowther, who met during high school. Finding an interest in psychedelic music, they formed officially in 2015 along with Elliot O’Reilly, whom they met working as farmers in Duranbah, along with Venezuelan-born bass player Lu-Lu Felix Domingo.

The band collaborated with King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard on their debut album, The Babe Rainbow, being later signed to the Flightless and 30th Century Records labels. In 2018, Babe Rainbow’s second studio album, Double Rainbow, debuted at no. 18 on the ARIA Albums Chart. Miles Myjavec joined as a drummer around this time. The band has also collaborated with American artist Jaden Smith. As of 2024, the band has released five full-length albums, along with three EPs. The band has also ventured more into soft rock with influences from Latin music.[2]

    Behind Babe Rainbow’s Cover of Dido’s ‘Thank You’ for Like a Version (Interview) [03:37 | JUN 05 2025 | triple j] https://youtu.be/pmMMmSxbxs8

    Video Description:

Babe Rainbow take you behind their cover of Dido’s ‘Thank You’ for triple j’s Like A Version.

    Generated Summary:

Main Topic: Babe Rainbow discusses their cover of Dido’s “Thank You” for triple j’s Like A Version.

    Key Points:

    • The band chose “Thank You” because of its blend of trip hop, ambient synth, breakbeat, and Dido’s “angelic” vocals over folky singing.
    • They considered sampling Eminem (whose song samples “Thank You”) or having their manager rap, but ultimately decided against it to maintain their mellow vibe.
    • They found the original’s piano part “spooky” after listening to the Eminem version.
    • They liked the deep resonance of the nylon guitar tuned low and how Angus’s voice weaved with the guitar.
    • They were excited to play their own song but nervous about the cover.
    • They enjoyed watching other Like A Version performances, specifically mentioning Pond’s Madonna cover and Missy Higgins’ Troye Sivan cover.

    Highlights:

    • The band found the reference to a towel in the lyrics to be a unique and interesting element of the song.
    • One of the band members, Miles, was moved to tears listening to the song while driving.
    • The band described the experience as “ten out of ten.”
